Summer & Autumn 2011 Report for Churchill Venison, Stalking & Events

Summer Festivals & Events
We started our event season with The Ideal Homes exhibition at SECC in Glasgow – we had no idea what to expect as this was the first time we had attended this – it was very interesting and modestly successful but we managed to introduce quite a lot of folk to venison!!  This was followed by “Rugby Sevens” at Murrayfield, our third time there and again it was very successful – our venison burgers, sausage rolls & chilli were very well received by the public!!

The summer continued with a list of music festivals- Rockness, T in the Park, Latitude, Belladrum & V Festival. All but Belladrum & V Fest were affected to some degree by the weather – T turned into a mud bath and Latitude was not much better!!  This clearly affected sales but did not dampen the fun!! V Festival was a huge success this year and so much fun thanks to a dry and sunny weekend and good support from Roger and his team who organised a fantastic marquee for us – thanks Roger!!

We also attended a number of local Beer Festivals, Highland Games, Food Fairs & Galas – all went very well with the exception of The World Pipe Band Championships at Glasgow Green where the attendance was badly affected by the weather.  All in all and taking into account one of the wettest years on record all went as well as we could have expected.

Stag Season
Despite one of the wettest, windiest ruts that we can remember, we had one of our most successful stag seasons – over the four week rut period we took fifty five mature stags plus a few young ones, which included some very good heads.  We would like to thank all the guests who joined us over this period, their support is very much appreciated and we hope all enjoyed their time with us – hope all the clothing has dried out by now!!
We used Mrs Delap’s stags on Auchadunan again this year.   Richard, who is the new stalker there did a good job and all who joined him on the hill enjoyed the experience.  The open hill stalking is a great contrast to the woodlands.  We have already started the hind season with several beasts already into the larder.  The bookings for hind stalking are good and we look forward to the remainder of the season – let’s hope for some good weather!!  We have taken on more land which gave us more to go at in the stags and will offer a few more hinds during the winter.  We took a short break to Sweden after the stag season to re-charge the batteries – a good time had by all.

Partridge & Pheasant Season
This year we started partridge shooting at the beginning of September – it seems incredible but we were almost driven off the hill on our first day by the midges!!  The next two days caught the tail end of a hurricane and only two of the six partridge days were dry.  Despite this we have had our best partridge season ever – well done Anton! - there are plenty of birds left on the ground which will provide an interesting addition to the coming pheasant days.  We have already started our pheasant season and so far have had four very good days – a long way to go until the 1st Feb but things are looking good!!

Christmas
Now that Christmas is this side of the horizon, we would like to draw your attention to the choices on our on-line shop. We are introducing a choice of gift boxes which will include other products from producers who are members of Food From Argyll – if it just venison that you would like to gift to a friend or family member, simply pick from the shop and we can make the box up here and send.
